Malou brings bright colours and high spirits to the world of design. How do Melle and Laura’s different styles complement each other and how do they find inspiration in everyday situations and travel? Read the interview about their creative process and balancing artistic freedom with commercial demands.

Can you start off by introducing yourselves and telling us a little bit about who is behind Malou Studio?
Malou Studio is composed of two friends from Berlin, Laura and Melle. We both love art, each in our own way. Laura worked as a graphic designer for many years and later founded her art agency to support and develop artists. Melle spent many years as an executive in the textile trade and ran a small business selling tile stickers and painting furniture on commission. We are two components that complement each other perfectly. Our mission is to bring good humor and positive vibes into people’s homes, which is why we founded Malou Studio.
What inspired you to create Malou Studio? How did you come up with the name Malou?
The name Malou Studio includes parts of both of us. The details will remain our little secret.
Your description says you’re saying goodbye to beige and diving headfirst into color. Has it always been that way, or was there a time when your designs lacked color?
Our style has never been colorless. However, our personal styles differ, which is part of what makes us such a great team. Mel loves bright colors, while Laura prefers a more reserved palette. This balance allows us to find a perfect middle ground and broaden our horizons.

How did each of you get into art and design? Were there any key moments that set you on this path?
We’ve both been very creative since childhood and were fascinated by art, shapes, and colors. Art and design are an escape from everyday stress for us. It’s a form of meditation that helps us relax and unwind.
Where do you like to create? Do you have a favorite place or environment that inspires you?
We find inspiration in various places, art designs, and everyday situations. We constantly come up with new ideas, especially when it comes to our sayings or designs inspired by our wanderlust and travels.
Do you have any rituals or habits that help you in your creative work?
We both need a clear head, free from to-do lists and chaos, to be most creative. Those moments when we have time just for ourselves, or when we step back from everyday life, are crucial. Sometimes we just chat away from stress and come up with ideas together. There are no specific rituals, but we can say that stress and chaos are not good companions for creativity.
How do you manage to balance creative freedom with commercial demands?
As artists, it’s important to try things out without focusing on the commercial aspect. Testing how our ideas are received is part of being an artist. If we believe in something, we think others will like it too.

Could you discuss your creative process from inception to the final design?
The process starts with an idea from both of us. We discuss it together, and brainstorming begins. Each subsequent step then takes on a life of its own to create a design. Either we’re both happy with it, or we make small adjustments. It’s different every time, but we always agree on the first rough draft, which makes working together much easier.
Can you pick one of your designs that is your favorite?
Laura loves the “Don’t overthink it” print in pink because it describes her best. She always has too much on her mind and needs a moment or Melle to bring her back to basics: “We’ll do it step by step to reach our goal.” Melle loves the “Iridescent lips, metallic gradient” print because she has a fondness for iridescent colors like pink and lilac.
What’s the future looking like for you? Any big projects coming up?
We simply want to create many more designs and collections that can be perfectly combined on the wall.
